The UNECE Convention on Access to Information, Public Participation in Decision-making and Access to Justice in Environmental Matters (Aarhus Convention) was adopted on 25 June 1998 and entered into force on 30 October 2001. It presently counts 47 Parties, including countries all along the economic spectrum, from some of the world?s wealthiest economies to countries with some of the world?s lowest gross domestic products. The Convention has a Protocol on Pollutant Release and Transfer Registers (Protocol on PRTRs). The Protocol was adopted by the Meeting of the Parties to the Aarhus Convention on 21 May 2003 in Kyiv. It entered into force on 8 October 2009 and currently has 35 Parties.
